Assignment 3: Exploring One Principle of Modern Architecture
    • Weight: %25
    • Word Count: 1500 words maximum (excluding the principle being quoted)
    • Submission date: Friday 06.10.2017, 16:00 pm
    • Hardcopy submission: Level 6 Assignment Box, Building 421 (Architecture Building), 26 Symonds
    Street.
    • Electronic copy submission: Directly in Canvas
    OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this assignment are to develop:
    • Your skills in identifying key theories describing the modern architecture in architectural hisotry
    • Your understanding of the transformations influencing the emergence of modern architecture
    • Your skills in clear, effective written communication, employing recognised academic and
    professional conventions.
    • Your skills in citing and referencing the resources correctly following academic and professional
    conventions
    • Your skills in visual analysis
    • Your ability to identify scholarly research
    CONTENT
For this essay, you are asked to:
    • Select one principle of ‘Modern Architecture’ described by an architectural historian/theorist including:
Kenneth Frampton, Anthony Vidler, Alan Colquhoun, Sigfried Giedion, Reyner Banham, William Curtis or
    Manfredo Tafuri.
    • This principle can be a definition or a description or a feature of Modern Architecture.
    • This principle clearly points to a key characteristic of modern architecture.
    • Explain this principle of ‘Modern Architecture’ in your own words.
    • Select a building (from the list provided at the end of this document) and explore how this principle allows us
to locate the building within the history of modern architecture.
    GUIDELINES FOR THE ESSAY
    • Start the essay with the principle (definition/description/ feature of Modern Architecture) at the beginning.
Write it as a quotation and include the reference. This principle should be clear, simple and concise. It
should point to an underlying feature of modern architecture.
    • To find a principle of modern architecture you need to spend a considerable time going through different
texts, so make sure you are planning in advance to find a proper definition/description. This is a very
important step in the structure of the essay.
    • Choose a different building from that which you wrote about in Assignment 1.
    • The essay should include the basic introduction of the building, similar to the information you gathered
in assignment one. For instance, name, location, date and architect of the building.
    • The essay should elaborate upon a key aspect of the building which resonates with the principle of modern
architecture. For instance, if the quote points to the ‘universal rational perfection’ or
‘radicalism’ or ‘struggle for progress’ as the key features of modern architecture or modern movement, then
you need to analyse how your selected building expresses progress or quests for
    rational perfection.
    • Explore the relation between the principle you’ve selected and a building by considering some of
    below points:
 Architect’s ideas in exploring the design of the building
 The building influence on other architects and the design of other buildings
 The importance of the building within the history and development of modern architecture
 Socio-political, cultural, economic, technological and ideological settings in which the
    building emerged
 Architectural institutions of the time
 The reasons why this building has been classified as modern
 The scale of the project
 Conflicting opinions and ideas against which the architecture emerged
 Formal and structural innovation and their appropriations into their present time
    • This assignment is an essay and it needs an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
    • Overall, the essay should be able to analyse why the selected architecture is considered as a modern
    building/structure.
    ASSESSMENT
This assignment is worth 25% of the marks for this course. Assessment criteria are:
    • The extent to which the quotation indicates key features of modern architecture
    • The extent to which the essay describes the ways through which the selected building can be classified
    as a modern building
    • The extent to which the assignment is well written, and written in your own words and with a clear
    introduction and conclusion
    • The extent to which the assignment is fully referenced, in accordance with established academic
    conventions
    • The extent to which images have been used to portray the building and support the argument
    • The extent to which scholarly resources are used
    REFRENCE
Acknowledgement of sources is an important aspect of academic writing. The University’s Referen©ite website
www.cite.auckland.ac.nz provides students with a one-stop online resource for academic referencing needs.
Referen©ite explains the essentials of referencing and how to avoid plagiarism. It also includes practical tools to help
students reference correctly and use references effectively in writing, and
presents examples of the various different referencing formats.
    SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
    • This is an individual assignment. Students who work together on the same buildings and submit similar work
will be marked down. Given this, be sure to choose different buildings from those your friends are writing
    about.
    • Essay must be written on a computer.
    • A4 format, portrait, with simple top left staple (i.e. no spiral binding; no plastic sleeve);
    • Essay must employ footnotes and include a bibliography, both formatted according to the Chicago
    referencing style.
    • Total word length, excluding principle quotation, captions, footnotes and bibliography: 1500 words.
    • Give the word count at the end of your essay.
    • Illustrate your essay with relevant images, including plans, sections and/or photographs. Splice your
images into your text, i.e. do not present them as an appendix. Every image must have a caption
immediately under it or just to one side of it. The caption should say what the image is of (briefly), and
should then identify the source for the image using the footnote format for short citations, i.e. author’s
surname, short title and page number if you take it from a book or journal. Include the full reference in your
    bibliography.
    • Full documentation (footnotes, bibliography and sources of illustrations) is essential. If your writing
is unreferenced, you will not pass.
    • Give consideration to how the final assignment looks like, that is the photographs are places beautifully
within the text and the captions are placed in an appropriate place with a readable font- size.
    • Plagiarism will lead to failure – use your own words, except when using direct quotations.
    • Read through and edit your essay several times before submission. You might read it out loud for yourself
or ask a friend to read it for you. This will help with editing.
    • You are required to submit both a hardcopy (paper copy) of your assignment and an electronic copy.
The deadline for hard-copy and electronic copy is the same.
    • Attach a School of Architecture and Planning Assignment Cover Sheet to the hardcopy. Before you
submit, you must fill out the Cover Sheet and sign it.
    • Submit your electronic copy directly in Canvas.
    • Upload you assignment only as a Word File (doc).
    • You cannot submit multiple file uploads. Make sure the files being uploaded is the correct version.
    • You cannot resubmit your assignment or submit the assignment past the due date.

    Criteria  D- to D  C- to C+  B- to B+  A- to A+
    1. Quotation
    The extent to which the
    quotation indicates key
    features of modern
    architecture:
    The quote and its
    interpretation do not
    address the topic
    adequately.
    Some consideration has
    been given to selection
    of the quote and its
    explanation.
    Good to very good
    consideration has been
    given to most aspects of
    the essay topic.
    Full, complete and detailed
    consideration has been
    given to identify and
    interpret the quotation.
    2. Argument
    The extent to which the
    essay describes the ways
    through which the selected
    building can be classified
    as a modern building:
    More consideration

    A R C H T C 1 0 2 / 1 0 2  ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM 代写
    needs to be given to
    formulating an
    argument in
    response to the
    essay topic.
    Some effort has been
    made to formulate an
    argument in response to
    the essay topic.
    An argument has
    clearly been made in
    response to the essay
    topic.
    An intelligent and convincing
    argument has been made in
    response to the essay topic.
    3. Writing
    The extent to which the
    assignment is well written,
    and written in your own
    words and with a clear
    introduction and
    conclusion:
    English needs more
    work; clarity of
    communication is
    variable. This essay
    lacks a logical
    structure. The
    introduction does not
    explain the essay’s
    scope or structure
    and the conclusion
    is inadequate in
    reflecting upon the
    essay findings.
    English is fair and
    content generally clear.
    Introduction, thematic
    structure and conclusion
    are all apparent.
    English is good and
    content clearly
    expressed. A considered
    introduction, a clear
    thematic essay
    structure, and some
    effort made with
    conclusion.
    English is excellent and
    content very clearly
    expressed. Well-considered
    introduction, clear thematic
    essay structure, and strong
    conclusion that makes clear
    reference back to the
    introduction and elaborates
    upon the essay findings.
    4. Visual
    The extent to which images
    have been used to portray
    the building and support
    the argument:
    Images have not
    been used to
    support the
    argument. More
    care is needed when
    writing captions and
    providing sources for
    each image.
    A reasonable number of
    useful images have
    been used. Some effort
    has been made to
    provide captions and
    sources for each image.
    A good range of useful
    images has been used.
    Images are sharp,
    located to support the
    points being made in the
    text, and supported by
    captions and sources.
    An excellent range of useful
    images. All images are
    sharp, carefully placed to
    support the points being
made in the text, with useful
    captions and full sources.
    5. Reference
    The extent to which the
    assignment is fully
    referenced, in accordance
    with established academic
    conventions:
    Referencing
    (footnoting and/or
    bibliography) is
    incomplete and
    largely incorrect in
    form.
    Referencing has been
    attempted but is not
    correct in formatting
    and/or you need more
    footnotes.
    Referencing is mostly
    complete and a good
    attempt has been made
    to follow the Chicago
    referencing system.
    Referencing is complete and
    an excellent effort has been
    made to follow the Chicago
    referencing system correctly.
    6. Resources
    The extent to which
    scholarly resources are
    used:
    The information is
    based on irrelevant,
    unimportant and
    non-reliable
    sources.
    Some effort has been
    made to use a
    reasonable number of
    relevant scholarly
    references.
    A good range of reliable,
    scholarly relevant
    sources have been
    used.
    An excellent range of
    academic resources, peer-
    reviewed journals, books,
    book chapters, well-known
    architectural periodicals
    have been used.
In addition, if any of the following standard comments are circled, then they also apply to your essay. If
none are circled, then you can assume that none of the comments are applicable to your essay:
    1. This essay is too short (less than 900 words).
    2. This essay is too long (more than 1050 words).
    3. More care is needed with proof-reading and editing your text.
    4.  You need to make better use of the University of Auckland’s guide to using the Chicago
referencing system for formatting footnotes and bibliographies. See  www.cite.auckland.ac.nz  .
    5. When footnoting, you need to include the full citation the first time you footnote any one particular
source and then to use the abridged citation for subsequent references to the same source. See
    www.cite.auckland.ac.nz  .
    6.  Too much reliance on quotes. Try to demonstrate your understanding of the source material by re-
    phrasing in your own words.
    7. This essay is largely descriptive rather than analytical.
    8.  The essay needs an introduction that explains the scope of the essay, the topic being pursued and
the questions being asked of the material. It is often very appropriate to include a statement about
the main essay findings, along the lines of: ‘This essay shows that . . . .’
    9.  The structure of this essay is not very clear. You might try using a sentence in your introduction to
explain the structure to the reader, or try using sub-headings to clarify the structure.
    10.  The essay needs a stronger conclusion. Try to reiterate the essay findings and also to elaborate
upon the importance of your essay findings.
    11.  More care is needed with image captions and sources. Every image needs a caption saying what
the image shows and where you got it from, i.e. its source.
    12. PLAGIARISM WARNING: Your Turnitin report shows that you are not always using quotation
marks to identify direct quotes. You must ALWAYS either use quotation marks for direct quotes, or
    reword into your own words.
    13. More care is needed with placing images and captions in relation to the body of the assignment.
