With the rapid development of economy and the change happened in the entertainment style of people, tourism has become increasingly popular these years. What’s more, event tourism plays an important role in the worldwide tourism industry and has significant influences on the society, economy and environment as well. According to Getz (2008), the events that are designed in purpose of improving the tourism industry are mostly driven by economic reasons. Some places will adopt the use of event tourism to deal with the low demand during the slow tourist seasons (Ryan, Smee, Murphy & Getz, 1998). Normal activities and events are often held to attract tourists from all over the world, and necessary resources will be allocated to accommodate these travelers that attend such events to give them enough convenience. Sports event is one of the various forms of events that can boom the tourism industry. Sports events tourism is a phenomenon that combines the social, economic and cultural influences together to interact with activities, people and places (Henderson, 2010). Such events often have three dimensions of impacts, which are social, cultural and political; economic and environmental impacts on the government, community and residents (Getz, 2008).
This essay will take the Formula One Grand Prix in Singapore as a sports event tourism example to develop the research. It will first give a brief introduction of the Grand Prix that held in Singapore. Then the essay will critically analyze the social and economic impacts the Grand Prix has from the perspectives of the government, community and residents respectively.
The official name of the event will be the FORMULA 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. The race was co-funded by the Government of Singapore, footing 60% of the total bill, or $90 million SGD, out of a total tab of $150 million SGD (BaptistaAlves et. al, 2010). This event served as a significant international sports event that had the ability to attract a large quantity of tourists and Formula One fans from all over the world, and made important impacts in the meanwhile for the government as well as the residents. In order to make full use of the two-day event, the Singapore Tourist Board came up with an idea of the “Grand Prix Season”, which last two weeks to attract tourists from nearby countries, for example, Australia, China, India and so on. The sales of tickets turned out to be quite satisfactory. Around 110,000 tickets were made available for the country's first Formula One Grand Prix (BaptistaAlves et. al, 2010).
    Social impacts
    Government perspective
Nowadays, an increasing number of governments support and promote events tourism to boost their tourism industry and increase national building images. While increasing the reputation and image of Singapore was one of the most important social benefits that the Grand Prix had on Singapore. Just like the ability of holding Olympic Games plays a significant role in demonstrating the image of one country, the ability to hold the Formula One Grand Prix is also an indicator of the development of the country. Until now, Singapore has held three times of the Formula One Grand Prix, and it is welcoming its fourth Grand Prix that will be held in this September. The national building images of Singapore have spread all over the world that Singapore is embracing its prosperity and will step further to achieve better future.
